Some people who hear the word "swallow" may think of that little bitty bird that has the split tail and is frequently featured in things like poetry and Snow White and junk. (I'm pretty sure that's a swallow - maybe a sparrow?) But anyway, after this week, my perception of the word "swallow" will forever and automatically be associated with my recent experience in acute care.
Yes, I survived the first week! I have discovered a few things:
- I like acute care more than I thought I would
- But that doesn't necessarily mean I want to do acute care exclusively in my future
- Barium is kinda gross
- Comfortable shoes are a must
- Your pockets are your best friends
- I absolutely hate the trauma intake ward. Ugh.
- No one seems to know where their dentures are
- I really like the geriatric population
- Severe dementia is both fascinating and heartbreaking
- I really like getting to hear people's stories
- The amount of change in patients from one day to the next is amazing
- Several layers of foam can make your hands feel really gross
- Wearing a lab coat makes you feel super legit
- Video swallow studies are really cool
- Acute care SLPs can really make a huge difference in patients' quality of life
Next week, we kick it up a notch.
